This project proposes that a meteorologist gazing at the horizon is a meteorologist at work. The horizon represents the point in space where air and water particulates mix and begin the weather-generation process. A false horizon is created by the facility's sinuous geometry, obfuscating the true horizon line from researchers at rest in their living quarters.

Among the world’s largest, most densely populated metropolises one trend is common regardless of location, societal diversity, or status in the global marketplace. Progressive and sustainable development is threatened by the need for more built space—housing, commercial and institutional. However, built space consumes raw land, a rare commodity in Tokyo or New York or Delhi or any other world megalopolis. In addition to land availability obstacles, rising construction costs present a significant fiscal setback. Private developers are not initiating low-profit affordable housing projects while municipalities lack the capital to fund ventures large enough to satisfy its residents’ needs. Currently, our most important world capitals are floating with their heads above the waterline; however, this paradox—a severe deficiency in square meters of built space and no land to build it on or money to build it with—will, in the near future, anchor or drown our vital urban centers.

Seemingly, the unavoidable task at hand is an impossible one: generate vast numbers of housing units, commercial areas and public regions without consuming any land and expending minimal capital resources.

An architectural model produced from 250,000 individual Lego bricks, this project asks if it's possible to utilize the modularity and rationality of the Danish modern building tradition to create a new kin d of expressive architecture. The building site is laid out as a grid of 3.6 x 3.6 meter squares, creating one continuous, pixelated surface. As a topographic map, the surface is morphed to form a terraced landscape of towers, accomodating 40,000 square meters of housing, hotel, offices and retail. The project becomes an accumulation of individual niches and outdoor spaces forming a collective organic architecture.

Project Role: Managing model construction and leading project documentation, including time lapse video production.

CPHX: 7 New Architectural Species from the Danish Welfare State

CPHX presents projects that are all specific urban experiments conducted in Copenhagen since January 2001 by BIG. At different stages of realization they portray a new breed of urban life forms, both locally specific and generally applicable, inctroducing residential diversity, programmatic alchemy, urban ascension, modular mania and political pro-action into the architectural species of the Danish welfare state.

If there’s one idealogical movement that’s gained the most ground in this election cycle, it’s populism. Expressing themselves in many ways – from concerns over immigration to trade policies – “average Americans” feel left out of the decision-making process that happens inside the Beltway. This joint third-place submission turns the tables on government’s old boys’ club. It envisions the White House as an “input-output machine, not just a storage device,” explains Congar. People from around the world can go online and register their comments, complaints or ideas. Servers inside 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue then process that information and proportionately display people’s gripes on video screens through the building’s hallowed halls, which also guide the circulatory flow of the President’s workday through various departments. “White House 2.0 strips the government of its perceived right to push its own agenda,” Congar says. “This is a total reversal from something like the Patriot Act. It’s where the public can track the government and affect their daily lives.”

The CityRacks, organized by the Cooper-Hewitt, called on designers to develop a new bike rack for New York City. By altering the geometry of a standard city street lamp, an additional purpose is generated for the Cobra fixture, a ubiquitous piece of city street furniture.

Digital technologies and the rise of the Internet liberated the worker from the traditional office, spawning telecommuting as a new labor paradigm. But the home office lacks sociality and the potential for water cooler collaboration. The existing urban condition, on the other hand, encourages impromptu partnerships. Companies like Workspace have realized that there is a clear market for flexible offices, particularly amongst the creative class. With that in mind, this project proposes that a ubiquitous typology - scaffolding - be re-purposed, serving not just its traditional role in construction, but also providing the infrastructure for mobile professionals.

On site, there is often excess scaffolding. In adaptive reuse projects it tends to be erected over the entire building, even when the work is 6 months to a year away. In new construction, it is active at the top, but sits empty at the bottom. The tube system is universally-applicable, creating flexible and configurable space within the module of the scaffolding. In established cities like London, these types of spaces allow for the perpetuation of the creative class; in boom-towns like Dubai, they would perhaps foster its creation. The system is both performative and parasitic, providing a legible simultaneity and a new typology for work in the city.

The Prada Transformer is an unusual building which has one of four different apparent shapes, depending on the function for which the building is needed at the moment. The building is roughly in the shape of a tetrahedron. Cranes rotate the building so that different surfaces of the tetrahedron face downward, thereby changing the building's form and function. The building's base is a hexagon when used for a fashion exhibition, a rectangle when used as a movie theater, a cross when used for an art exhibition and a circle when used for a special event.

The building was first used for the fashion exhibition "Waist Down - Skirts by Miuccia Prada", which began April 25, 2009.

Project Role: Model production, architectural visualization, rotational sequence and animation for crane operators, and meeting operations requirements as provided by the client.

Strategically located on top of the Journal Square PATH station, this proposal for a new mixed-use development combines seven apartment types and four separate stacking techniques to generate enormous diversity in the experience from one unit to the next.
